Class #101 Spinning Monday 8:30 a.m. (Anne)

This morning's Spinning class falls on July 5th. Anne Super planned a challenging workout with a fun Fourth of the July twist. Decked out in her finest red, white, and blue Spinning gear, she started us off with a bang - Anne had a handful of "snaps" and what I thought was the sound of my old joints popping was actually Anne's pre-class fireworks. We had a full Spinning Studio this holiday morning.

Our session was a nice blend of cardio Spinning and off-the-bike sculpt exercises using hand weights. Class began with a five-minute quick-cadence flat ride to get our blood pumping and muscles warm. Our work began with a segment of "rolling hills" - short duration pick-ups with a moderate degree of resistance dialed-in on our bikes. After six minutes of rolling hill pick-ups, Anne gave us the option to hop off our bikes and do some hand weight bicep exercises. I opted for the hand weight exercises and I was amazed how tough the light hand weights can be. Although the weight is relatively light, four or five sets of various biceps exercises will have your muscles screaming for mercy. Our hand-weight exercises took about three minutes and then we jumped back on our bikes for ten minutes of longer hill work consisting of three 3-minute hill pushes with the final minute at a fast cadence. Anne had us increase our resistance and not let up on that resistance during our recovery breaks between hills. Our next hand weight segment consisted of triceps exercises, mostly sets of triceps kick-backs. From there, it was back on the bikes for a final cycling segment. Anne had us crank-up the pace with lower resistance and we did some fast 1-minute pick-ups with a 15 second recovery. It's amazing how quickly a 15-second recovery flies by! We finished-up this morning with some shoulder exercises with our hand weights - over-head presses and some lateral raises. As always our cool-down consisted of some easy stretching.

Another fun addition to Anne's holiday class format was Fourth of July trivia. I didn't do so well answering most of the questions, but I did get one final question correct. Anne asked the class if anyone knew what number class this was for me this morning....101.

What a great class! Thanks Anne.
