Class #106 Chizel-ates Monday 8:30 a.m. (Denise for Kim W.)

Monday mornings have been challenging for me schedule-wise during the Find Fred project and I finally had the opportunity to find out what Chizel-ates is all about. Denise Crawford was substituting this morning for a vacationing Kim Waguespack. This is a once-a-week class on the PAC Group Exercise schedule.

Class started on time in the Mind Body Studio and per my tradition, I was a little late and had to join the warm-up in progress. If I had to describe the class format, it reminded me a lot of a boot camp class with a few pilates and yoga exercises added for good measure. We used hand weights, stability balls (pictured), and gliders in most of the exercises. As the name Chizel-ates implies, there is a focus on the core muscle groups - a main principles of Pilates. Exercise sets included squats, oblique twists, abdominal crunches, and a challenging group of shoulder exercises using hand weights.

I've become a truly believer in the versatility and benefit of stability ball exercises and Chizel-ates incorporates plenty of stability ball work. If there's one piece of equipment I recommend you include in your exercise arsenal, it's a stability ball. You don't need to be an exercise pro to use the stability ball and it's a great accessory to have at home for days when you can't get to the gym. Stability balls were originally developed for use in physical therapy treatment and in the 1990s they became popular in the health/club world of exercise. Using a stability ball forces your core muscle groups to work together, improving your stability and alignment. The abdominals and low back muscles are often worked simultaneously providing an even strengthening of the anterior and posterior core sections of your body. You'll find stability ball exercises are fun, challenging, and comfortable! Including stability ball exercise in your fitness routine is just another reason to check out the many PAC Group Exercise classes that incorporate their use.
