Class #43 Vinyasa-Style Yoga Thursday 5:15 a.m. (Jane)

After a couple days of high-intensity cardio classes, I'm in dire need of a yoga class! This morning's Vinyasa-Style Yoga is just what the doctor ordered. Practicing yoga has always provided me with a healthy balance in my fitness regimen and I'm really looking forward to Jane Harkin's well-attended class.

An important feature of this particular class is the environment. It's a flow-oriented practice, but with the added challenge of a warm studio set at 90 degrees. Around the Club, Jane's Tues/Thur 5:15 a.m. classes are affectionately referred to as "hot yoga".

I arrived a bit early for class this morning. This is my second hot yoga class and I've noticed the regulars often show up 15-20 minutes early to get acclimated to the heat. This is a quiet, focused morning group and it's a great class for experienced yogis. The vinyasas/poses are moderately challenging and the high temperature definitely adds some additional workload. The heat has benefits. It also enhances early-morning range of motion, which I personally appreciate being a broken-down old runner.

This morning's practice included lots of easier poses during the first part of class, allowing us to stretch and wake-up our systems. We loosened-up our muscles and established a steady "asana" breathing pattern. Jane skillfully led us through a lengthy series of sun salutations before we moved on to an equally long segment of warrior 1, 2, and 3 poses. Most yoga classes include some balance poses and I've found I'm much more wobbly in the early morning hours.

Jane showed us a really cool variation on one of my favorite poses, the side plank. She had us add a twist by lowering our extended arm and it really challenged my core strength and balance.

It's amazing how much I sweat in this class. After 45 minutes I'm pretty much soaked, but it feels great and I do have more range of motion.

We finished our practice by spending a few relaxing minutes in shivasana pose. I'm relaxed and ready for the busy day ahead.

The PAC gift card winner for this morning's practice is Tom Grosscup. Congratulations Tom!
