Class #56 Aquacise Saturday 9:00 a.m. (Joan)

Saturday mornings are one of the busiest times of the week at PAC. I decided to mosey on over to the Club after I finished running a few easy miles with the Pelican Running Club group. Joan Beckstrom's Saturday morning Aquacise session is always well-attended and this morning was no different. As I hopped in the 8-lane pool, I counted 20 classmates already warming up in the chilly water (we had a heavy rain storm on Friday, which always drops our pool temperatures a few degrees).

During my Group Ex project, I've developed an aptitude for some classes and I think I'm well-suited for water exercise. As a young boy, I was a competitive swimmer and I've always enjoyed being in the water. Please take notice - water exercise is by no means an "easy" Group Ex class. Like any other class, you can make it as hard or as easy as you need it to be. I challenge everyone to give one of our Aquacise or Deep Water Running classes a try. This is a valid workout for any ability level.

Our pool area was just coming to life as we began class this morning. As the day progresses, the pools will be packed with recreational summertime swimmers but for the meantime we enjoyed a serene and beautiful Louisiana morning. Joan led the way, keeping our exercises changing and moving during this solid hour of cardio work. After an easy five-minute warm-up, we got down to the business at hand. Towards the end of class, Joan challenged us with a fun segment of sports-specific water exercises. We mimicked volleyball serves and spikes, practiced our NBA basketball jump shots, and the busted some mean Karate kicks to finish things off. You kinda had to be there, but the way Joan led the group during this segment was worth the price of admission alone. She gets into it....

I've been hitting the Aquacise classes pretty hard recently and I've learned something important. Although our pool bottom surfaces are smooth but if you do a lot of Aquacise or Deep Water Running sessions, it would be wise to buy a good pair of water exercise shoes. They're available online and I'm sure local specialty stores are able to order them. My toes are sore!!

Joan, thanks again for another outstanding Aquacise class!
