Class #58 Killer Core Monday 8:00 a.m. (Ingrid for Justin)

The BOSU ball certainly looks harmless enough. With lots of questionable fitness equipment variations on the market, the BOSU ball training system is one of the newer developments that is here to stay. Its name is derived from "Both Sides Utilized" and the exercises performed challenge both sides of the human body to work in conjunction with the other, creating a very balanced and symmetrical strengthening workout. That being said, the little blue BOSU ball has become my balancing nemesis!

On this "BOSU Monday", Ingrid Rinck was substituting for Justin Finley as our Killer Core instructor. Ingrid and Justin also co-host a very popular 90 minute double-class on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. called Shred-it/Killer Core. Ingrid is quite familiar with BOSU core training and she did a great job leading us through this 30 minutes of intense core work. There were about 12 of us gluttons for punishment in class this morning.

Like all Killer Core classes, the Monday morning format is straightforward, simple, and tough. We performed three sets consisting of five different BOSU exercises: oblique twists, knee-ups, single-leg scissors, prone back extensions, and finally, planks with an extended single-leg hold. This group of exercises thoroughly works both the abdominal and lower back muscles. In Killer Core classes, there's always an emphasis on working the low back just as much as the abdominals. This is important in creating a healthy strength balance, improving our balance posture.

As always, I had trouble with my balance on the first set of exercises. The BOSU ball is much like a Stability ball with a more solid platform (see photo). The second and third sets were better and I was able to perform some of the exercises without modifying my position to stabilize my balance - I was forcing all of my core muscles to do the balancing work and that's the whole objective of BOSU training.

We were a quiet, focused Monday morning group of exercisers! This 30-minute class flies by quickly and my midsection received plenty or work. Thanks Ingrid!

The PAC gift card winner for this morning's class is Kera Charpentier. Congratulations Kera!
