Class #61 Pure Strength Tuesday 8:15 a.m. (Emiliana)

Looking back on the evolution of group exercise classes, it's interesting to note how traditional strength training has become an important part of what used to be a "cardio-only" exercise format. Emiliana Ellworth's Pure Strength classes are an excellent example. Held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, this class is quickly becoming a PAC favorite and it's easy to see why. Emiliana is an accomplished strength training expert as well as one of the best Zumba instructors around. Rest assured there's not much Zumba hip shakin' goin' on during Pure Strength. Gather your hand weights, body bar, step riser, and stability ball and it's time to do some serious strength training!

Like any well-designed strength-training workout, this class follows a toe-to-head progression, meaning we started with exercises targeting the larger muscle groups of the lower body and finished with the smaller muscles in the upper body. Emiliana demonstrated our routine with precision and I was able to comfortably follow her movements. The exercises are not complex but she emphasizes the importance of proper technique and utilizing slow and controlled motions. We started class with three different sets of hand weights, light, medium, and heavy weight, and Emiliana had us use all three weight levels depending on the type of exercise.

It's amazing how complete of a strength training workout one can do with three sets of hand weights and a body bar. We performed squats, lunges, rows, lateral raises, bicep curls, and triceps extensions before finishing with abdominal and low back work on the stability ball. Emiliana does a great job designing a workout that is thorough and balanced. She announced that next week she'll include one additional set of exercises into this 75 minute session.

If managing your precious exercise time is an issue, I highly recommend trying the Pure Strength classes. You'll enjoy a focused and very challenging strength-training workout. Emiliana does all the planning for you...just show up and follow along!

Great class Emiliana!
