Class #84 Aquacise Monday 8:00 a.m. (Joan)

It's another scorching hot Louisiana summer morning and what better way to greet the new day than spending some time in one of the beautiful PAC swimming pools.

I arrived on time (for once!) to find over 25 water exercisers present and accounted for, ready for Joan Beckstrom to begin our class. I was only able to stay about 45 minutes this morning, but I made the most of my time and I got in some quality cardio work.

A lot of the participants in this morning's class have also participated in the Deep Water Running session that precedes Aquacise. Most of the group is warmed-up and Joan starts us off with cross-country skiing warm-up drills. Joan is a big sports fan - a lot of her cardio work is designed to mimic various sports movements. In honor of the World Cup Soccer tournament currently taking place in South Africa, we do some soccer drills including goalie saves and heading an imaginary soccer ball. We also follow Joan in some fun basketball and karate exercises. In between our "sports" drills, Joan directs us to run in place for the 30-seconds. It's amazing how quickly this will elevate the heart rate of even the most conditioned athletes. 30-seconds of fast water running will get your attention in a quick way!

As always, I really enjoy working out with Joan and our faithful Aquacise members. There's a wonderful social component with each and every class and the group was planning to get together later this evening to celebrate the Summer Solstice. Now that's what I call solidarity!

This morning's gift card winner is Ellen O'Connell.
