About the Program*

The Pelican Running Club is a year-round running program entering its fifth season of training in preparation for the 2011 Rock & Roll Mardi Gras Marathon & ½ Marathon to be held on Sunday February 13, 2011 in New Orleans. The heart and soul of the program is the group training run on Saturday mornings. The program is designed for athletes of all ability levels with an emphasis on assisting first-time marathoners and half-marathoners prepare in a safe and supportive system.

The Pelican Running Club includes the following:

  • Saturday morning group training runs. We start at the Mandeville Trailhead on the Tammany Trace at 7:00 a.m.
  • Weekly running club e-mails that will include information on healthy training, injury prevention, nutrition for endurance athletes, running gear, and much more
  • The marathon training schedule starts on Monday September 13, 2010; the half-marathon training schedule begins on Monday October 4, 2010.
  • If you're new to marathon or half-marathon training, there are six-week "build-up" training schedules available. The "build-up" schedules provide new runners with a gradual preparation period preceding the regular training programs beginning in September in October.
  • All training schedules are available online via PDF download on www.thepac.com.
  • During the spring and summer months the program emphasis will shift to relaxed Saturday morning group training runs, the focus on maintaining base conditioning

Fred Klinge, PAC General Manager, will be leading the program, attending each Saturday morning group training run. Fred has completed 29 marathons with a personal best time of 2:18.15. He participated in the 1984 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and has served as a Training Coach for the Little Rock Marathon Training Program. Fred is currently certified as a Health/Fitness Specialist by the American College of Sports Medicine.
